Heightened Safety
Cataract surgery involves removing the eye’s natural lens and replacing it with an artificial lens (IOL). During traditional cataract surgery, a handheld blade and other instruments are used to create the initial corneal incision and access the capsule that holds the lens. While these steps are generally safe, there are risks and possible complications due to human error using handheld instruments.
Laser cataract surgery has the potential to reduce many of the risks by replacing the handheld instruments with a computer-guided laser to perform key steps of the cataract removal process. Our eye surgeons use the LenSx femtosecond laser, a sophisticated, state-of-the-art laser that makes self-sealing incisions on the surface of the cornea, reducing the chance of infection. The LenSx laser is also used to open up the front of the natural lens capsule to access the cloudy lens and gently soften it.
Increased Precision
In our experience, the use of a computer-guided laser allows for optimal precision in the cataract surgery procedure and more predictable outcomes. Prior to the procedure, your eye surgeon will create a detailed plan for the corneal incision using a three-dimensional map of the eye created through a scan. This allows the surgeon to make a clean incision at a specific location using the femtosecond laser. This approach makes it easier for the incision to seal on its own.
Better Results
The final step of cataract surgery involves inserting the IOL where the cloudy natural lens has been removed. Studies show that using a laser to remove the cataract allows for better centering and positioning of the IOL. The use of the femtosecond laser also helps preserve the capsule so it can securely hold the IOL in place. A well-positioned and centered IOL is important for the final visual outcome of the procedure. Laser cataract patients also experience a very quick recovery time.
