Choosing an IOL

Choosing an IOL Austin Eye offers a range of artificial intraocular lens (IOL) options to accommodate the diverse needs of our cataract patients. Each IOL offers unique features and advantages. If you are considering cataract surgery, we recommend you familiarize yourself with your IOL options first. Our trusted eye doctors break down the specifics of each lens in this blog post.

Monofocal IOLs

Monofocal IOLs improve vision at a single fixed distance — either near, intermediate distance or far. The majority of patients who choose a monofocal IOL opt to have distance vision corrected, which means they may need to wear reading glasses to see objects at near and mid-range distances.

Multifocal IOLs

Multifocal lenses are premium IOLs that provide clear vision at multiple distances (i.e., near, intermediate and far). Multifocal IOLs are a great option for cataract patients with presbyopia (the age-related loss of near vision) and who wish to reduce their dependency on prescription eyewear at various distances.

Toric IOLs

Toric lenses restore vision after cataract surgery while minimizing the effects of astigmatism, a refractive error characterized by an abnormal curvature of the cornea. One in three cataract surgery patients has astigmatism that causes noticeably blurry vision. Toric IOLs have different powers in different areas of the lens to compensate for the abnormal curvature of the cornea.

Symfony IOLs for Extended Range of Vision

The Tecnis Symfony IOL is another type of premium lens that corrects the visual effects of presbyopia. It is the first and only presbyopia-correcting lens that provides continuous, high-quality vision at a range of distances. The Symfony is also available in Toric form for patients with astigmatism. The majority of Symfony IOL and Symfony Toric IOL patients enjoy independence from prescription eyewear.

Which IOL Is Right for You?

Before your cataract surgery, our doctors will meet with you to take measurements of your eye’s unique specifications, including the size and shape of your eye. They will also discuss with you your visual goals and lifestyle. All of this information will be used to select the IOL that will provide you with the best possible vision.
